Overview:
The Chaplain provides spiritual care to patients, families and staff according to ethical standards of practice for chaplains and counselors. Participates in on-call rotation with other chaplains. Offers educational seminars when requested. Works collaboratively and as a liaison between spiritual care department and assigned units, committees, and other Carle and non-Carle businesses, organizations, and personnel.
Responsibilities:
- Provide direct spiritual care to patients, staff and families.
- Clarifies value issues with patients, families and staff to support ethical practices/decisions.
- Assist in coordination of spiritual care for assigned clinical units.
- Provide in-service presentations and educational seminars on spirituality.
- Provide community presentations on spiritual care and spirituality.
- May occasionally oversee/mentor spiritual care students or volunteers.
Qualifications:
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Bachelor's Degree in Divinity, Healthcare, or Related Field
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Minimal requirement is successful completion of one (1) unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE). Full-time chaplains having at least one (1) unit of CPE and needing four (4) for board certification, must negotiate a time line for CPE and board certification completion with hiring manager prior to hire.
Candidates with experience in palliative care and/or hospice chaplaincy preferred.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS - 1. All chaplains, full-time, part-time, or PRN, must maintain good standing with a faith group with an endorsement document on file either from faith group or from board certifying body within 90 days of first day of employment. If at any time during employment, a chaplain withdraws from a faith group association or a faith group withdraws endorsement from a chaplain, that chaplain must demonstrate that a process is in place for endorsement by another faith group within one (1) year. 2. Full-time chaplains must achieve board certification within three (3) years of first day of employment unless negotiated prior to hiring with hiring manager. 3. Full-time chaplains must be board certified chaplains who maintain certification requirements or who are eligible to be certified by one of the major chaplain certifying bodies which require certification using common standards and competency requirements. SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE Must possess the following skills: organization, planning, spiritual assessment, goal setting, team and independent working skills. Knowledge of personality and faith development theories needed for spiritual assessments. Ability to adapt to the unpredictability of trauma or crisis situations. Conducts ethical chaplaincy practice according to the "Common Code of Ethics for Chaplains, Pastoral Counselors, Pastoral Educators and Students" required by board certifying chaplain organizations.
