FUNCTION:
The Middle School Band Director is under the direct supervision of the principal of the school to which the band director is assigned. With the approval of the principal and under the guidance of the Curriculum Specialist for band, the Middle School Band Director is responsible for determining and implementing the middle school band program and related activities, and works cooperatively with the High School Band Director(s) to ensure greater coordination of the band program.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & REQUIREMENTS:
Teacher Duties
* Plans for successful student learning of daily objectives that include basic knowledge and skills, and central concepts of the discipline.
* Ensures students are engaged and successful in learning, critical thinking and problem solving.
* Utilizes multiple models of instruction, assessment and effective teaching practices.
* Utilizes State TEKS and District Curriculum to design engaging lessons which are challenging, high quality and appropriate for the level of instruction.
* Maintains current accurate records of daily attendance and textbooks issued.
* Able to effectively manage time and materials.
* Accepts related assignments as requested by principals.
* Instructs classes in the subject area(s) assigned.
* Is responsible for the use and care of available instructional materials.
* Maintains current records of student grades and progress.
* Accurately evaluates and assesses performance of students in subject/s taught.
* Confers regularly with parents on student progress.
* Fulfills related responsibilities, e.g., reporting grades, exams, field trips, and programs.
* Maintains classroom discipline that allows for student learning, safety and teaches individual responsibility.
* Analyzes data and information from assessments and utilizes it for individualizing instruction.
* Identifies students that are at-risk of failing the subject or grade.
* Appropriately plans for remediation and intervention for students identified as at-risk.
* Appropriately modifies and accommodates student's needs based on IEP goals and 504 accommodations.
* Works cooperatively with the campus librarian in the selection of materials appropriate to the subject area.

Band Duties
* Assumes responsibility for audition and placement of students in the band program, and communicates decisions to counselor and principal.
* Maintains responsibility for repairs and constant maintenance of school-owned instruments and equipment assigned to band.
* Maintains care and upkeep of band music library.
* Becomes involved in band team-teaching within the band unit system. (High school and middle school principals will make time available for team-teaching to support a continuing program for Grades 6-12.)
* Teaches Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills to ensure that all band students are prepared for continued participation in the band program at intermediate or advanced levels.
* Remains current on rules and regulations governing UIL and TMEA music competitions.
* Supports community-related performances when possible.
* Attends all meetings called during the year by the school services consultant for band area.
* To accomplish school seasonal duties previously mentioned, Middle School Band Director arranges practice time before and after school. Therefore, Middle School Band Director should no1mally expect to spend one or more hours of extra time before and/or after school each day working with sections, full band, or individuals as situations dictate. Supplementary pay has been included in Middle School Band Director's salary as compensation for extra time.
SEASONAL DUTIES
* August/September
* Assists assigned high school with its summer band program for ten (10) half days.
* Plans and outlines activities for approaching school year.
* Selects music and instructional materials for use in school year.
* Plans and prepares performances for concert band during the fall semester.
* Begins team-teaching a minimum of one class a day at the high school in the band unit system.
* Is encouraged to attend home high school football games to assist with instruction and supervision of students in the band unit system.
* October/November
* Assists in supervising high school band in the band unit system at marching showcase and contest activities.
* Is encouraged to attend home high school football games to assist with instruction and supervision of students in the band unit system.
* Assists students in preparation for All-City and Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) All-Region Band auditions.
* Continues team-teaching at high school in the band unit system.
* Directs band performance at middle school football play-off games as needed.
* Assists at high school TMEA District and Region auditions.
* December
* Continues to assist students with preparation for All-City and TMEA All-Region Band auditions.
* Plans and presents holiday season (winter) concert or program.
* Begins to recruit prospective band members from feeder schools.
* Continues team-teaching at high school in the band unit system .
* January
* Selects music for University Interscholastic League (UIL) Concert Contest.
* Participates in All-City and TMEA All-Region Band auditions.
* Assists students in selection and preparation of solo and ensemble contest music.
* Actively participates in All City Band rehearsals and clinic.
* Continues to recruit prospective band members from feeder schools.
* Continues team-teaching at high school in the band unit system.
* February
* Actively works on concert and sightreading contest music.
* Assists students in preparation of solo and ensemble contest music.
* Attends annual TMEA Clinic-Convention, if possible.
* Continues team-teaching at high school in the band unit system.
* Provides assistance to high school band at UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest. (See note.)
* March/April
* Participates in middle school solo and ensemble contest. (See note.)
* Participates in UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest and Concert Band Showcase. (See note.)
* Provides assistance to high school band at UIL contests. (See note.)
* Continues team-teaching at high school in the band unit system.
* May
* Auditions band members in beginning bands, and notifies individual students and counselors regarding assignments.
* Presents a spring end-of-year concert or program.
* Prepares current inventory of equipment and music.
* Arranges for repair of equipment as needed during summer break.
* Continues team-teaching at high school in the band unit system.
Participation in all District-sponsored contests, showcases, and festivals, designated UIL contests is expected. Participation is defined as (a) entering students for competition in the event, if applicable; and (b) aiding in the supervision, administration, or judging as assigned by contest or festival chairperson. Duty includes assisting high school bands with all contest activities, including, but not limited to, all UIL and Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) activities.
