Duties and Responsibilities

Summary of Position: The Academic Advisor serves the academic, administrative, and developmental needs of undergraduate transfer students, juniors, and seniors in the College of Arts and Sciences. Complementing faculty advising and other administrative services, the Academic Advisor supports college transfers, juniors, and seniors toward a timely graduation, integrating career and post- graduate goals into their academic planning. The Academic Advisor also supports the mission and values of the University, as well as the mission and strategic plan of the College of Arts and Sciences. Duties and Responsibilities: * Care for undergraduate students (transfers, juniors, and seniors in the College of Arts and Sciences) through individual academic advising sessions, imparting a working knowledge of degree requirements and opportunities for students to achieve their academic and career.

* Assist, challenge, and support students in identifying and clarifying academic, career, and life goals and offer appropriate motivation and encouragement.

* Be a proactive and constructive participant within an advising team dedicated to student success.

* Accurately and efficiently communicate transfer credit and remaining degree requirements (Core, College, and major requirements) for a timely graduation using online and off-line resources. * Understand, convey, and implement academic policies, procedures, and protocols to students, parents, faculty, and other stakeholders, while upholding FERPA requirements and the highest ethical standards.

* Assist students in resolving administrative issues related to their academic records and assist with the various duties related to course registration issues.

* Maintain and update student records, such as meeting notes, records relating to degree progress, correspondence, and other documentation when appropriate.

* Identify, monitor, and provide guidance to students on academic probation. Make probation and dismissal recommendations.

* Refer students directly to appropriate campus and off-campus resources to support their academic success.

* Assist with initiatives on a departmental and inter-departmental level that support persistence through graduation.

* Present academic workshops on various topics, such as goal setting, transfer-student transitions, networking and interviewing skills, and graduate school preparation.

* Serve as liaison to selected academic departments and schools as assigned; work with department chairs, program directors, and administrative staff to ensure accuracy and consistency in communication of program requirements.

* Assist with the planning and implementation of advising programs and outreach including new- student orientation, academic probation advising, and early academic alerts.

* Participate in the training and mentoring of new professional staff, as necessary.

* Develop and demonstrate expertise in academic knowledge regarding program offerings and requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences.

* Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to a fast paced, changing environment where responsibilities and duties may frequently change.

* Occasional weekend and evening hours are required.

Minimum Education and/or Work Experience
Master's degree in College Student Personnel, Counseling or related field required and one to two years of related experience.

Certificates/Credentials/Licenses

Education and Experience Required: Master's degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, or related field required and previous higher education experience, preferably in academic advising or transfer student support. Ability to work effectively with undergraduate students, parents, peers, faculty, and deans. Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills that enable the Academic Advisor to adequately assess students' academic needs and guide them to the appropriate university resources. Ability to readily provide empathic, compassionate, consistent, accurate, developmental, student-focused, and honest advising. Excellent attention to detail and proficiency in keeping accurate student records. Demonstrated ability to work constructively in teams and alone. A commitment to academic excellence, social justice and service, values-based leadership, global awareness, and diversity. Ability to articulate and support the university's Jesuit Catholic mission and identity. Ability to work effectively with undergraduate students in a holistic manner with an enthusiasm for providing student-centered services in the Ignatian tradition.
